1. Wilden, All Saints

All Saints, Wilden is a surprise! The brick façade gives no clue to the treasures within. In 1880 Alfred Baldwin, father of Prime Minister Stanley, controlled Wilden Ironworks. He was inspired to provide a church for his work-force. Alfred had married Louisa MacDonald, whose sisters had married pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones (Georgiana), classical painter, Edward Poynter (Agnes), and John Lockwood Kipling, (Alice, mother of Rudyard).The links between the families culminated in exquisite windows at Wilden. The windows were originally of plain glass, but between 1902 and 1914 were replaced by 14 Burne-Jones windows. Other treasures include a gold-thread altar frontispiece designed by William Morris, altar hangings from Westminster Abbey, an illuminated prayer book and the Baldwin silver Communion Plate.

 Wilden is open on the 1st Saturday of each month, school holiday Wednesdays between 10 am and 2 pm, and other times by appointment.
